That's crazy! Nice job with the rescue. I would be happy too if I had been in that duck's situation and was finally released to the water! I'm sure she/he was very happy to get a bath!

Hooded Mergansers nest in my wood duck boxes every year. Maybe it was looking for a home?

Cool story and one lucky duck! Hope there isn't a bear in my latrine when we get there!

Nice rescue! I almost burst out laughing at work while reading this, I think the duck on the rope is what did it :)

Other than THAT very strange event, how was the rest of the trip?

Thanks for all the comments. We had a great trip, including the "Duck Incident". The fishing wasn't great for us but we go more to canoe than fish. After the duck incident whenever someone needed to make a trip to the to toilet and wanted to be sure to have some privacy they would call out "I'm going duck hunting" and the reply was (obviously) "quack, quack."

I don't know what number campsite it was but it was the the first campsite southwest of the portage from Hatchet Lake. I think that is close to your island campsite.

What a great story with a happy ending - no pun intended.

Who knows how long that poor girl was down there, but thanks for having the heart to rescue it, and I'm glad she made a "clean break".

We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

What a story! Good job. We were there two years ago and I recall that site is Number 4. The number should be on the back of the seat.

WT? Seen the post title a couple days ago but hadn't clicked on it till now. That is bizarre. At least someone looked before they sat down for their business. I can just see someone taking care of natures call and having something from below flying up into their undercarriage. Yeah, that would get one's attention. LOL

Some people see nature as being made "Just for them", and view others as an invasive species..... We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group worked for their money .. the second group did not.” WTF???

I'll be that way next week. I'll keep my eye's open for a dirty duck. :) I rescued several ducks from chimneys and fireplaces over the years... Never a Merganser though.
